Madonna brought Confessions II to the Beacon Theater in Manhattan over the weekend, one day after a surprise concert in Times Square, and the room apparently had not come down from that yet, as fans danced in their seats and shouted at the screen.
The roughly ten-minute short covers the first six songs from her upcoming album, also titled Confessions II, due July 3rrd. It is framed as a sequel to Confessions on a Dance Floor from 2005, directed by Torso — the duo of David Toro and Solomon Chase — and shot across New York, Los Angeles, and London. The settings range from an arena to a club bathroom to a forest, and at some point dancers shoot green lasers from their pelvises. During the Q&A with Anderson Cooper afterward, Madonna said she wanted to try the lasers herself. Apparently they get quite hot.
The film is packed with cameos, with Madonna urging fans to watch it more than once to catch them all. Benedict Cumberbatch, Kate Moss, and Debi Mazar all make an appearance, as is Julia Garner, who has been cast to play Madonna in a biopic. Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter appears alongside Madonna for their duet “Bring Your Love,” as does Madonna‘s daughter Lourdes Leon who plays a camera-wielding femme. The whole thing was Guy Oseary‘s idea, Madonna said — stringing the songs together into a film rather than releasing them as individual videos.
According to reports, Sabrina Carpenter does show up in Madonna’s “Confessions II – The Film”.

She also introduced a new track called “Danceteria,” named after the New York club where she got her start. And in a move entirely in keeping with the evening’s spirit, the screening was phone-free — devices locked in Yondr pouches before anyone took their seat. She addressed it directly, telling the crowd to put their phones down and actually connect with each other. “It was good when it was just me and MTV,” she said, reflecting on how much has changed around the business of releasing music. These days, she said, making a film feels more interesting to her than making a music video.
The short film premieres on YouTube today, June 8th at 4 p.m. GMT.
