Lizzo has released her new album, BITCH, and she was deliberate about the name. “Reclaiming the word Bitch is power,” she said. “It’s taking a label once used to diminish women and turning it into a declaration of confidence and unapologetic self-love. So many incredible women in music have used the word for positivity — like Meredith Brooks and Missy Elliott. It was only fitting to name my album Bitch because it has become my favourite word when using it on my own terms. Because I am 100% that bitch.” The phrase traces back to “Truth Hurts,” her Diamond-certified single that sat at number one for seven weeks. She has been that b**ch for a while and her album is just making it official.
The title track interpolates Meredith Brooks‘ classic and was produced by Ricky Reed, Blake Slatkin, and Zack Sekoff. Another standout, “Sexy Ladies,” reimagines “Sexy Lady,” the 2005 go-go hit from Washington D.C. band UCB, as a tribute to the genre on its 50th anniversary as D.C.‘s official music. It is a specific, considered choice that sits a bit apart from what you would expect on a mainstream pop album, and that is the point.
Additionally, “Don’t Make Me Love U,” released back in March, opened the album campaign with a video of Lizzo confronting a past version of herself, and the response from critics and fans gave the whole cycle a strong foundation to build from.
On the live front, Lizzo did 12 sold-out shows across the Blue Note Jazz Club in Los Angeles and New York, headlined the Houston Rodeo in front of over 70,000 people, and performed at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Runway Show in Miami on June 9th. The range of those three settings alone says something about where she sits right now as an artist in a new era of her creative journey.
Beyond music, Lizzo‘s previously announced children’s book titled, Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin‘, is slated for release on September 8th through Simon & Schuster. She’s also gearing up for a film role as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Amazon MGM‘s Rosetta. Lizzo also appeared on The Roast of Kevin Hart, which is a different kind of performance altogether but one she handled well by all accounts.
