British music royalty Sugababes shocked fans with the released highly anticipated album The Lost Tapes.
The trio of Siobhan Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan reunited this year for their 17-date UK tour in October, only to have everybody’s jaw drop upon discovering that they had released an album from 8 years prior. The singularity that surrounded this album was its impending release on Polydor. Recurrent disputes with regaining ownership of their original moniker, MKS – which resulted in renaming as well as the debut single ‘Flatline’ – has caused a rift within the label, leading to speculation and subsequent reports suggesting they were subsequently dropped; supposedly due to subpar performance.
Keisha Buchanan [of MKS at the time] spoke out against the rumours and confirmed that they were still signed with Polydor however no official statements were made from Polydor regarding their future involvement. Keisha Buchanan said to NME
“We’re still with Polydor. 100%,” she said. “For us we weren’t expecting the single to chart. On the first day it went to 16, then we did one TV show with Alan Carr and it went to Number 10… If we’d done more TV and there had been more promotion around us then we definitely would have had a bigger single. But it did what we wanted it to do. On our Soundcloud we had 100,000 views on one hour. We sold out at the Scala in 60 seconds. For us, I mean I’m not gonna say chart position isn’t important, but we are about the album.”
Since the release of that statement the project never got to see the light of day until now.
After the stunning return of The Lost Ones, Sugababes made a triumphant announcement via social media:
“We wrote this album almost 8 years ago and for various reasons, it didn’t get an official release, so it’s with great pride that The Lost Tapes is available now on all streaming platforms 🎁 A very Merry Christmas, love Mutya, Keisha & Siobhan ❤️”
