According to Spanish prosecutors, Shakira must serve slightly over eight years in prison for an alleged tax fraud case.

While no trial date has been set as of yet, prosecutors stated on Friday (July 29), according to the Associated Press, that if the ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ hitmaker is found guilty, they would ask the court to sentence her to eight years and two months of prison time.

Shakira’s appeal in the case was rejected by a judge in May. The case originally made headlines in late 2018 when it was revealed that she had been charged with failing to pay taxes totaling $15.5 million for the years 2012, 2013, and 2014.

The status of Shakira’s residency throughout the relevant years is the main issue at the core of the dispute, which has been ongoing for years. Shakira has denied spending the majority of those years in Spain, as claimed by the prosecution. According to Reuters, her representatives stated earlier this week that the case itself represents a “total violation of her rights.”

Their declaration was made in response to reports that Shakira’s legal team had rejected a settlement offer because they believed the ‘Whenever, Wherever’ singer had already paid the sum they claimed she owed.

The news follows Shakira and Gerard Piqué’s recent separation, which saw the pair release a joint statement to People.

The statement read, “We regret to confirm that we are separating. We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect.”

The former-couple share two children, Sasha Piqué Mebarak and Milan Piqué Mebarak together.
