In preparation for the release of her new biographical film, Keyshia Cole: This is My Story, Keyshia Cole has offered fans an early preview.
The R&B singer’s modest origins, ascent to stardom, and tumultuous relationship with her now-deceased mother, Frankie, are all explored in the Lifetime-produced movie, which will make its network debut on June 24 at 8 p.m.
The D’Angela Proctor-directed biopic, in which Cole serves as executive producer, will also mark her acting debut and will be aired as part of Lifetime’s Black Music Month celebration. The biopic is expected to include a new song, which will serve as the follow-up to 2021’s “I Don’t Wanna Be in Love.”
The “Heaven Sent” singer is heard saying in the trailer: “As a young girl, I survived so many different situations … I always wanted to make a movie about my life.”
The film’s description reads:. “The story follows Keyshia through her early days in Oakland honing her musical talents, to her rise to a multi-platinum selling recording artist and television personality, to her complicated yet warmhearted relationship with her mother Frankie Lons (Debbi Morgan). It’s a story of childhood trauma, tragedy, the complexity of love, and overcoming obstacles to become the best version of oneself.”
Prior to the release of the trailer, Cole issued a statement in which she shared her inspiration for the film. She stated that the role provided her with the opportunity to reflect on all the precious moments that she had previously overlooked.
“This is a story of a daughter’s love for her mother, and although my heart remains broken from her untimely passing, I am honored to be sharing it with the world,” she said.
Cole went on: “Playing the role of myself was a unique opportunity to re-live special moments in my life that also gave me the chance to process her loss in ways I did not expect. I miss her every day, and even though she is not here, her presence was felt throughout this film. Mom, I love you.”
Cole’s mother, Frankie Lons, died in October 2021 following a drug overdose.
