The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has grossed $977 million worldwide, surpassing Oppenheimer‘s $975 million to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time. The film had already established itself as the biggest musical biopic ever, overtaking Bohemian Rhapsody‘s $911 million weeks after its premiere.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film traces Jackson‘s journey from his time in the Jackson 5 to his emergence as the King of Pop.

The film opened with $97 million domestically and $217 million globally, breaking the musical biopic opening record previously held by Straight Outta Compton with $60 million. International earnings total $607.2 million, while US domestic receipts reached $370.2 million. Jaafar Jackson, Michael‘s nephew, makes his acting debut in the lead role, supported by Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Jackson‘s parents.

With this success, Michael is now Lionsgate‘s highest-grossing film ever, surpassing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which grossed $865 million at the global box office. The studio is expected to greenlight at least one additional Jackson film based on the commercial success achieved.

Amidst the films success is the critical reception which has been mixed, with reviewers noting the film’s watered-down approach to Jackson‘s life, as this release omits discussion of child sexual abuse allegations against the pop icon. Lionsgate emphasized crowd-pleasing elements in marketing, including concert re-creations and music videos, with the film becoming a cultural flashpoint, balancing celebration of Jackson‘s artistry with ongoing debates about how his legacy is portrayed on screen.
