The new dean of Howard University’s College of Fine Arts, actress Phylicia Rashad, has apologized to students and parents for her earlier jubilant tweet about Bill Cosby’s unexpected release from prison after the State Supreme Court acquitted him of all charges with prejudice.
Rashad’s apology letter which she sent on Friday, saw the former ‘Cosby Show’ star offer apologize for her remarks after hearing that Cosby’s rape conviction had been overturned.
The since-deleted tweet read: “FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!”
Rashad explained in her letter: “My remarks were in no way directed towards survivors of sexual assault. I vehemently oppose sexual violence, find no excuse for such behavior, and I know that Howard University has a zero-tolerance policy toward interpersonal violence.”
She went on to say in her letter that, she intends to “to engage in active listening and participate in trainings to not only reinforce University protocol and conduct, but also to learn how I can become a stronger ally to sexual assault survivors and everyone who has suffered at the hands of an abuser.”
Her enthusiasm for Bill Cosby’s release could likely be linked to her time on the show with him from 1984 until 1992 when she co-starred with Cosby on The Cosby Show as Clair Huxtable, Cosby’s wife.
