During a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Muni Long revealed that she underwent a double lung transplant after doctors informed her she had only one week to live. The 37-year-old singer contracted pneumonia while performing as an opening act on Brandy and Monica‘s ‘The Boy Is Mine‘ tour in fall 2025. Long, who suffers from Lupus, an autoimmune disease, found herself particularly vulnerable during the tour, which took place in cold northeastern regions where her condition worsened significantly.
Despite her deteriorating health, Long initially attempted to continue performing, missing several shows due to pneumonia before eventually reaching a point where she could barely leave her bed to make her stage call time, with her final performance before withdrawing from the tour consisting of only two songs. Her family and team strongly encouraged her to return home and rest, recognizing the severity of her condition.
After returning home for Thanksgiving, Long discovered the full extent of her medical emergency when she woke up in the hospital. Doctors informed her that she required an immediate transplant to survive. Faced with a stark choice between hospice care or receiving new lungs, Long chose the transplant. “They were all like, you need a transplant,” she explained. “I asked, how long do I have to live? And they said, a week. One week. My jaw dropped literally. I was like, ‘That’s rude.’ But they wanted me to understand this is not a joke.”
Long is currently in recovery and reports doing well, though her voice may require six to twelve months to fully recover for performance purposes. While her initial concern focused on her singing ability, she has prioritized quality of life and her role as a mother. “The ego and the vanity was like, what about my voice?” she reflected. “But I look at my son and I think about how much more life that I have to live. Quality of life was first. I can’t sing if I’m not here.”
