The mega podcast host has threatened to exit his deal with Spotify, when and if it ever feels like he needs to ‘walk on eggshells’ to prevent facing issues with the platform.
On Tuesday’s edition of The Joe Rogan Experience, MMA fighter Josh Barnett confessed that he was scared to speak candidly as certain listeners would pore over every word he said with a fine-tooth comb.
Rogan reportedly told Barnett, “There’s more people pouring over it but it’s the same thing. I do it the same way.”
He went on to say that, should his show ever feel like “something different,” he is willing to exit his contract with the streamer.
“If I become something different because it grew bigger I will quit,” Joe asserted. “If it gets to a point that I can’t do it anymore- where I have to do it in some sort of weird way where I walk on eggshells and mind my p’s and q’s- fuck that!”
According to reports, Rogan secured a lucrative deal with Spotify to make his podcast ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ an exclusive on the platform, which was said to be worth about $100 million. However, the New York Times recently claimed that the deal was expected to be in the $200 million range.
Rogan has faced severe criticism for purported misinformation spread via his podcast, prompting 270 physicians, scientists, nurses, and educators to express their concerns with Rogan’s show, notably in relation to COVID-19 misinformation.
In response, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek stated during the company’s earnings call that they wouldn’t “change our policies based on one creator nor do we change it based on any media cycle, or calls from anyone else.”
However, Trevor Noah of The Daily Show might have explained Spotify’s position on the matter much more accurately.
Trevor stated, “Part of me wishes that Spotify would just drop the facade. Just come out and be like, ‘We do not believe in silencing Joe Rogan, because he makes us money. But if at some point he ends up costing us money, then we will drop him, because money.’”
