Vybz Kartel released his new album God & Time on June 5 through TJ Records, Vybz Kartel Muzik, and Zojak World Wide. The title comes from a Jamaican expression about faith, patience, and how things unfold in their own time and given everything Kartel has been through to get here, the name does a lot of quiet work before a single note plays.
The title track came with an official video directed by Ruppi, filmed across Miami and Kingston. Features on the album include Farruko, Skillibeng, and Shenseea, who appears on the single “Panic,” as well as Spice, Wizkid and Movado joining the project. Thematically the album moves across a range of personal reflection, dancehall energy, sensual material, crossover sounds, and writing that goes somewhere vulnerable. That breadth has always been part of what made Kartel‘s catalogue what it is.
Kartel‘s backstory is evidently a significant part of the project, as Adidja Palmer spent 13 years incarcerated before his murder conviction was quashed by the UK Privy Council in March 2024. Jamaica’s Court of Appeal declined to retry the case, and he was released in July of that year. Since then he has moved quickly, getting back on stage, back in the studio, and earning back-to-back Grammy nominations for Best Reggae Album tied to Party With Me and Heart & Soul. His post-release single “God Is The Greatest” passed 30 million video views this year, seemingly hinting at the groundwork for God & Time being well laid before it arrival.
The album also reunites him with TJ Records, the team behind Viking (Vybz Is King) and King of the Dancehall — the latter of which included the RIAA Gold-certified “Fever.” That continuity matters, as these are the collaborators who have helped produce some of his most defining work, and picking up with them again signals a deliberate return to something that works.
July brings another moment for Kartel, who is set to headline Reggae Sumfest on July 18th alongside Mavado, ,marking a reunion of two artists whose rivalry ran through the heart of dancehall in the 2000s.
