A woman who sued R. Kelly for $4 million for allegedly enticing her to his Chicago recording studio when she was 16 years old with the promise of a job if she had sex with him, has been given priority access to the singer’s royalties.
Plaintiff Heather Williams, claims that when she was just 16 years old in 1998, she first saw Kelly on a Chicago street and later had a sexual relationship with him after being persuaded to visit his recording studio in exchange for a role in one of the singer’s music videos.
The accuser just received priority access to Kelly’s royalties from a court.
Kelly’s harassment victim will now have first claims on the singer’s royalties, the Illinois Supreme Court decision, to help settle the hefty $4 million ruling against him.
The court concluded on March 23 that Williams would be permitted to access the royalties Kelly received from his music released at Sony Studios after evaluating the singer’s assets.
Prior to the disgraced singer’s loss of another $3.5 million in a ruling in favor of his property management in a lawsuit over unpaid rent for a Chicago studio, the artist’s account was estimated to be worth about $1.5 million in 2020.
The ruling comes after a lower court previously ruled to grant Williams “priority access” to the royalties since she was the first to legitimately request the funds from the record company.
