HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery have announced an eight-part documentary series titled Jay-Z in 8, directed and executive produced by Rick Rubin, the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings who previously produced Jay-Z‘s “99 Problems.” Jay-Z and actor Daniel Kaluuya also serve as executive producers, with Leila Mattimore and David Rohde credited as producers. The series is scheduled for release in fall 2026, though an exact premiere date has not been announced.
Rubin will conduct interviews with Jay-Z across all eight episodes, exploring his music, lyrics, life experiences, and creative process. In a teaser released by HBO, Jay-Z reflected on how pain has driven his artistic output. “Everyone had this same experience, except I was the one that could stand on the soapbox and articulate what we were going through,” he said. When Rubin responded, “Without the pain, you wouldn’t have done the work,” Jay-Z countered: “The pain, you don’t say it’s necessary, you don’t say you need it, but if it’s there, you use it.”
The documentary’s fall release coincides with significant anniversaries in Jay-Z‘s discography, as his landmark album, Reasonable Doubt, marks its 30th anniversary in 2026, while The Blueprint reaches 25 years. Jay-Z is currently in the midst of an active touring schedule, having performed at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia last month. He has three shows scheduled at Yankee Stadium on July 10th, 11th, and 12th, with each date themed around different albums and eras. July 10th will focus on Reasonable Doubt, July 11th on The Blueprint, and July 12th will be an “Extra Innings” performance.
Additional tour dates are planned for Paris in September and Los Angeles in October. A $1,500 anniversary box set of his entire discography has also been released.
