The BOB MARLEY biopic, “One Love,” had an impressive opening weekend, grossing $51 million, making it the third highest-grossing movie globally in 2024 so far. The film, which explores Marley‘s journey during the recording of the iconic 1977 album “Exodus” and the subsequent years, has garnered $27.7 million domestically and an additional $29 million internationally.
While reportedly costing $70 million to produce, the biopic set a record in Jamaica for the largest movie opening to date, with the music legend’s son, Ziggy Marley, expressing gratitude to fans for their favourable reception, remarking:
“My family and I are honored with the amazing response to ‘Bob Marley: One Love’,” Ziggy Marley said in a statement to Variety on Monday.
“Like my father’s music, this movie is meant for the people and his message of peace, love, and unity is clearly connecting with audiences around the world. We thank the people for embracing this film and in so doing helping to highlight the message of one love.”
In contrast, Sony‘s latest offering, “Madame Web,” faced challenges, grossing $25.8 million domestically and experiencing the worst start for any recent Spider-Man-related film. The movie, with an $80 million production cost and additional marketing expenses, struggled to find success at the box office. Meanwhile, “Argylle” and the animated film “Migration” secured third and fourth places, contributing to the third-largest domestic box office weekend of the year.
Looking ahead, the release of Margaret Qualley‘s “Drive Away Dolls” is anticipated next weekend, while the highly awaited “Dune: Part Two” is on the horizon with a March 1st release date.
