Will Smith took up the hosting responsibilities on Red Table Talk from his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, daughter Willow Smith, and mother-in-law Adrienne Banfield-Norris for a special Father’s Day edition, which aired on Sunday.
The 52-year-old took up the mantle along with Kevin Hart to talk about their worst parenting blunders, ex-wives, kids’ relationships, and more, including personal confessions, revelations, and critical life lessons.
The pair talked about being somewhat protective of their daughters, with Hart saying:
“She talks to me about it and I had to learn to be okay!” Hart exclaims. “I had to learn to not say, ‘Get the f— out of here. What are you talking about?!”
Smith also jumps in and explains how he usually feels the need to protect his daughter.
“One of the things I ran into with Willow, because she was raised around good men, she has a little bit of naivety around what [predatory] behavior would be like,” he says. “Willow’s 20 now, but from 16 to 19, I really found myself colliding with her. I just felt like she didn’t totally comprehend some of the difficulties [that could arise].”
This comes ahead of the pair teaming up for the remake of the John Hughe-directed 1987 comedy Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The pair will play the roles of the original film stars Steve Martin and the late John Candy as two mismatched guys who go on a three-day journey filled with mishaps while attempting to return home to Chicago for Thanksgiving.
According to Variety, the new film will be a modern rendition of the original, with Smith and Hart playing characters who are compelled to overcome travel hurdles in order to return home to their loved ones.
