Vin Diesel revealed to Variety that development on a script for a spinoff film focused on Charlize Theron’s Fast & Furious character Cipher has already begun.
Theron previously starred in 2017’s The Fate of the Furious before appearing in this year’s F9.
Diesel’s statement was accompanied by Charlize Theron’s confirmation that the script for Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard’ sequel has been finalized, with production set to begin early next year.
In 2019, Diesel revealed on Instagram that work on a female-led Fast & Furious spinoff, one of three planned by Universal Studios, was starting to take form with names such as Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet all expected to play a role.

Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Dominic Toretto’s wife Letty Ortiz, threatened to leave the franchise for a lack of female representation in the writers’ room the same year Diesel hatched the concept of a female-driven Fast film.
Rodriguez reportedly agreed to return for Fast 9, only after a female screenwriter was brought on board. According to Bloomberg, Rodriguez stated, “I felt like there was not enough of a female voice in the franchise. You should evolve with the times, not just pander to certain demographics that are stuck in the past.”
Meanwhile, the aforementioned spinoff’s status is currently uncertain but is probable that, like F9, the global health crisis has deemed it nearly impossible to find the right time.
Here’s to hoping.
