Tom Holland confirmed his marriage to Zendaya in his new Esquire cover story, and he did it in a single sentence. Asked whether he had to send messages to family members to clarify the AI-generated wedding photos that went viral earlier this year, he replied: “No, because they were all there.” The interviewer noted that Holland then closed the subject entirely — “That’s all you’ll get on that” — and they moved on.
The backstory to the photos is its own thing. In January, Zendaya‘s stylist Law Roach said at the Golden Globes that the wedding had “already happened,” which sent the internet down a long road of speculation. AI-generated images of Zendaya in wedding attire began circulating and ended up convincing a surprising number of people, including some in her personal life. “I was just out and about in real life and people were like, ‘Oh my God, your wedding photos are gorgeous,'” she told Jimmy Kimmel in March. “And I was like, ‘Babe, they’re AI. They’re not real.'” She mentioned that friends had actually got upset about not receiving an invitation. Holland told Esquire he found the whole thing funny, for the obvious reason.
On Zendaya herself, Holland was considerably more forthcoming. “Our business can present very stressful situations and it’s really nice to have a bedrock of a relationship that will stand the test of time,” he said. “We can support each other in ways that only we can, because only we understand really what it’s like to live this life. I found my person. She’s my best friend, and I’m the happiest I ever have been when I’m with her, but I also have never felt so supported and safe, ever. Period.”
The couple have appeared together in four Spider-Man films and are both attached to Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey. Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in July. Holland also addressed the franchise’s future, saying he would like to stay long enough to mentor the next Spider-Man in the same way Robert Downey Jr. mentored him, and suggested Emmy winner Owen Cooper as someone he thinks could be a strong successor.
