Taylor Swift‘s “I Knew It, I Knew You,” written for Toy Story 5, debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, becoming her 15th career chart-topper. The song pulled in 27.2 million first-week streams and 87,000 sales, knocking Ariana Grande‘s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” which held the top spot last week, down five slots.
The track is an ode to cowgirl Jessie, written in a country-leaning aesthetic that suits the character well. It reunites Swift with Jack Antonoff, who co-wrote the song and handled instrumentation, and marks her first release since The Life of a Showgirl, her 12th studio album, came out last September. With Toy Story 5 opening in cinemas this Friday, the numbers are likely to climb further before next week’s chart update.
The rest of the top five belongs to Ella Langley, who holds both second place with “Choosin‘” and fourth with “Be Her,” with Drake‘s “STFU” at number three. All three chart-toppers over the past three weeks — Swift, Grande, and Drake — are signed to Republic Records, which is an unusual run for a single label.
The chart news arrives a week after Swift was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, becoming the youngest woman ever to receive the honour. In her speech, she looked back across 23 years, saying: “The ups and downs, the industry battles, the trials and tribulations, the tears and the cheers and the dog piling of doubt, the criticisms fair and unfair, the complete loss of privacy, the world tours and the ego wars and the twists of fate, the absolute magical chaos of this path that I chose when I was too young to remember it ever being a choice at all: songwriting was the easiest thing I ever did.”
