T-Pain claims he suffered a four-year depression after a plane chat with Usher in 2013, during which the singer talked candidly and took him off guard.
The singer talks about a 2013 trip he took around the BET Awards in a new episode from the Netflix series ‘This Is Pop.’ Per the ‘5 O’clock’ singer, a flight attendant woke him up and informed him that Usher wanted a word.
T-Pain revealed: “Usher was my friend. I really respect Usher. And he said, ‘I’m gonna tell you something, man. You kinda fucked up music.”
T-Pain was taken aback by the statement, which he originally mistook for a joke until Usher then repeated himself. Usher then said, “‘Yeah man you really fucked up music for real singers.’ I was like, ‘What did I do? I came out and I used Auto-Tune.’ He was like, ‘Yeah, you fucked it up.’ I’m like, ‘But I used it, I didn’t tell everybody else to start using it.’”
According to Pain, that conversation was the “very moment that started a four-year depression for me,” as he reveals in the show’s teaser trailer.
This conversation will take place years after Jay-Z took shots at ‘Auto-Tune’ rappers on his Blueprint 3 single “DOA,” which T-Pain claims was only significantly influenced after Usher’s remarks.
