The highly-anticipated sequel to the 2016 animation film Sing has an official release date, years after the sequel was announced.

The original Sing was about a koala trying to save his once-famous theatre from extinction, by hosting a singing competition; the prize money of which was misprinted due to a mistake by the koala’s assistant. The Garth Jennings directed animation was hugely successful with a box office collection of $634 million, against a budget of $75 million.

Sing featured covers from many famous songs such as Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”, Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”, Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing’, Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”, and Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing” and had an original song called “Faith” by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande which was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Following the huge success of Sing, Sing 2 will see Garth Jennings return as writer-director with Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy also returning as producers. Also returning are original cast members Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, and Taron Egerton including some fun new faces namely; Bono, Pharrell Williams, Halsey, Letitia Wright, Eric Andre, Chelsea Perretti, and Bobby Cannavale.

The official summary for Sing 2 reads: Buster and his cast have turned the New Moon Theater into a local hit, but Buster has his eyes on a bigger prize: Debuting a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in glamorous Redshore City.

But with no connections, Buster and his cast—including harried mother pig Rosita, rocker porcupine Ash, earnest gorilla Johnny, shy elephant Meena and porcine provocateur extraordinaire Gunter — have to sneak their way into the world-famous Crystal Entertainment offices, run by a ruthless mogul wolf named Jimmy Crystal.

In a desperate attempt to get Mr. Crystal’s attention, Gunter spontaneously pitches an outrageous idea that Buster quickly runs with, promising that their new show will star lion rock legend, Clay Calloway. Problem is, Buster has never met Clay, an artist who shut himself away from the world more than a decade ago after the loss of his wife and hasn’t been seen since.

As Gunter helps Buster dream up an out-of-this-world theatrical masterpiece, and the pressure (and sinister threats) from Mr. Crystal mount, Buster embarks on a quest to find Clay and persuade him to return to the stage. What begins as Buster’s dream of big-time success becomes an emotional reminder of the power of music to heal even the most broken heart.

Sing 2 is slated for a December 22nd, 2021 release after being postponed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic.

We can’t wait!
