The Canadian actor has responded to Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s statement that the upcoming Marvel film ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ rollout will be an ‘experiment.’
Disney CEO Bob Chapek addressed the release of Liu’s forthcoming MCU film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, during the company’s Q3 earnings call. Disney’s choice to distribute the picture exclusively in cinemas for 45 days before releasing it on Disney+ was discussed by Chapek. Shang-Chi will be the first Disney film to have a delayed release since the studio’s most recent releases have all been released simultaneously in cinemas and on the streaming platform.
During his statement, Chapek said: “On ‘Shang-Chi,’ we think it’s going to be an interesting experiment. The prospect of taking a Marvel title to [Disney+] after just 45 days would be an interesting data point.”
While Chapek may have merely been attempting to explain the studio’s choice to release the picture differently owing to current events in the film industry, his explanation did not sit well with the film’s titular superhero, who made his feelings known on social media.
Liu captioned his Instagram post, saying:
“We are not an experiment. We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise. I’m fired the f**k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US.”
The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film will serve as Marvel’s first movie with an Asian protagonist and will also star Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Leung.
