Regina King learnt that she is one of the creators being considered for the forthcoming Superman remake during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Cross Connection on Saturday.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. was in search of a director for the project and amongst the list of names was Regina King and Barry Jenkins. Host Tiffany Cross said to King:

“I’m curious, because there’s a little bit of gossip. You’re rumored to be on the shortlist to direct ‘Superman. You and Barry Jenkins, both of your names have been thrown out there. Anything you want to tell us? Is there any news you can break this morning about those conversations?”

In shock, King replied, saying: “Tiffany, that is news to me. You have broke the news to me. News break! Live on MSNBC!” King said. “Yeah, no, I have not that until just now. Oh wow.”

King’s reply comes less than a month after The Hollywood Reporter reported that Warner Bros. is “committed” to recruiting a Black filmmaker to lead the next Superman movie.

Along with King, prospective filmmakers include Steven Caple Jr. of Creed II, Barry Jenkins of Moonlight, and Shaka King, whose highly acclaimed 2020 film, Judas and the Black Messiah, got him an Oscar nod for Best Picture.

King is no stranger to the comic book genre, having just directed the Oscar-nominated movie One Night in Miami. Last year, the Oscar winner featured in HBO’s Watchmen and is presently preparing to helm Bitter Root, a film based on a Harlem Renaissance comic book series.
