During a recent interview with Billboard, Monica, who is widely recognized for dropping some of R&B’s best tracks, revealed she’s currently in the works to release an all-country album.
Speaking of her love for country music and her upbringing, the ‘Boy is Mine’ hitmaker said:
“I grew up loving country music and my stepfather, who raised me, is a Methodist minister, but he also drove buses, and he would take us to Nashville, Gatlinburg and Dollywood in Tennessee,” she explained. “I became a really big fan of Dolly Parton at about eight or nine years old. That was my real introduction to country music.”
She went on: “Shortly after, it was Kenny Rogers. I started listening to the depth of the songs and the fact that they were unafraid to say whatever it was they felt. I felt like this was a great time for me to really step into an area that I’ve always admired and loved.”
Monica then went on to say that she has welcomed into the genre with “open arms,” even having appearances on tracks by Jimmie Allen, Little Big Town, Dolly Parton, Rita Wilson, and Sara Evans.
The ‘So Gone’ singer joins an expanding number of musicians from different genres who have openly declared their love for country music. Monica’s announcement of an upcoming country album follows in the footsteps of Nelly, who revealed a future country-inspired album following the recently released Tim McGraw-assisted track “Over and Over.”
Other musicians to dabble in the genre include Lil Nas X, K-Michelle, H.E.R., and more.
