The poll was voted in by industry figures along with artists which include BILLIE EILISH, Stormzy, Jorda Smith, Wolf Alice, AJ Tracey, Charli XCX, Foals, and Yungblud and it declared Coventry rapper Pa Salieu as the winner.

The 23-year-old rapper released his debut mixtape in November, and whilst Salieu is yet to reach the UK charts, his tracks such as ‘Frontline’ and ‘My Family’ have become a staple in the rap industry.

The elated Salieu said: “I was just really happy to even be included on the list alongside some amazing artists, a few of who I know personally. They’re all crazy talented, so to be the winner of something like this so early in my journey just feels mad.”

Runner-up to Salieu for this year’s list is 21-year-old singer-songwriter Holly Humberston. Making the top five are two London-based vocalists Griff, Berwyn, and Greentea Peng.

Although BBC’s Sound winners don’t always go on to make a splash as hoped, a few have truly disrupted the music industry including Adele and Sam Smith. Last year’s pick, Celeste who soundtracked John Lewis’s 2020 Christmas campaign is also gearing up to release her debut album in February.

Congratulations to Pa Salieu for the pick.
