‘Sour,’ which serves as Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album, had the best first week of 2021, smashing the previous streaming record. ‘Sour’ surpassed Lewis Capaldi’s previous record for the most-streamed for a debut album in its first week.
Furthermore, her track ‘Good 4 U’ is the year’s biggest hit, with 117,000 chart sales in only seven days. According to The Official Charts Company, the US singer has 13.5 million streams, making her “the year’s biggest breakthrough artist.”
In January, Rodrigo’s debut song, Drivers License, topped the UK charts, surpassing Spotify’s record for the most streams in a single day, with 17 million streams on the 12th of January.
Sour’s 51,000 sales, which include streaming, sales, and downloads, are the most for a first album in two years, surpassing Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent in May 2019.
Over the last seven days, Rodrigo’s album received 45.7 million individual track streams, i.e. (30,945 streaming-equivalent sales), according to the Official Charts Company.
Rodrigo also became the first artist in six years to debut at the top of both charts with their first album. The most recent was Sam Smith, who released the album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ and the single ‘Lay Me Down’ in 2015.
