The festival will “not be on the streets due to the ongoing uncertainty and risk COVID-19 poses,” according to a statement sent by the organizers this morning (June 18).
Carnival organizers decided not to host on the streets due to the uncertainty and lack of time for carnivalistic to prepare, prompting them to “refocus [their] efforts for 2021.”
News of this year’s cancellation comes after the festival was previously canceled for the first time in its 54-year existence last year owing to the coronavirus epidemic.
Alternatively, a virtual event called Notting Hill Carnival: Access All Areas was organized, allowing individuals to participate in the celebrations from the comfort of their own homes.
Organizers have stated that they are actively working on “alternate events” which will allow people to celebrate from home this year, with more information to come.
