Following an impressive comeback after a two-year hiatus, fans of Normani and virtually everyone else wondered why the talented songstress was missing from the first round of performers to grace the stage at the 2021 MTV VMAs.

In a Twitter post from fellow collaborator Cardi B, the femcee shared a hopeful tweet, saying she hopes her friends Normani and Lizzo will be called to perform in this year’s awards event.

A subtle tweet that would then spark so much hoopla on social media, following Normani’s response, which read:

Normani’s ardent followers immediately erupted on Twitter after learning that the singer had not received a call from the show’s organizers. The hashtags “letnormaniperform” and “booknormani” rapidly rose to the top of the trending list, which saw Normani become the huge hot topic.

The music video for Normani and Cardi B’s song “Wild Side” got off to a rocky start as Rolling Stone published a story accusing them of queerbaiting after the ladies were seen nude and thrusting against one other in the video. Cardi B afterward blasted the publication in a series of social media postings.

Normani’s 2019 MTV VMA performance of her track “Motivation” is still regarded as the best of that year, making it even more upsetting to fans. Her performance, which was packed with great choreography and early 2000s hip-hop and R&B allusions, drew millions of views online.

In response, Normani fans flocked to Twitter to criticize the MTV Video Music Awards for failing to book Normani for this year’s show.

Another fan asserts her opinion on the songstress lack of invitation, saying:

One user even suggested another performer be taken out to give Normani a spot:

It should be noted that the event’s organizers have yet to disclose the final list of performers for this year’s event. According to the recently disclosed list, the majority of the musicians mentioned are actively promoting their freshly released endeavors. As a result, Normani, Lizzo, and Cardi B are all likely to be included in the final call, which is expected to have a more star-studded lineup.

As of this writing, the event’s organizers have yet to issue a comment in reaction to the controversy, but one thing is certain: fans want Normani to perform.

The saddest thing about this situation is that we don’t know if the singer will be asked to perform because of her remarkable abilities or out of pity. We shall, however, have her in any case.
