According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film which is slated to begin filming in November will be penned by Neil Cross, the show’s creator and writer, with Jamie Payne serving as director.
Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, played by Idris Elba, is a man who is so dedicated to his profession that he will go to any length to solve a case. Elba’s performance in the show has earned him Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG awards, as well as Emmy nominations for his depiction of Luther.
Luther will face off against his detective rival, played by Erivo, and the primary villain of the film, played by Serkis, in the film adaptation of the television series.
Speaking to EW about what next he expects from his character, Elba said:
“I feel like John has to make some decision in jail,” he said. “It’s quite clear that it would be very difficult for him to be a policeman moving forward. I think that’s a great setup for a movie. The last few seasons have been more like mini-movies, and film allows us to now have more dramatic pin points moments that are slightly more compressed and it’s a bigger but smaller dose of Luther.”
The film will be produced by Cross and Elba, along with Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready.
