Marlon Wayans is returning to ‘Scary Movie‘ with a reboot dropping June 5th, reprising his role as Shorty alongside brothers Shawn and Keenen — the first Wayans family involvement in the franchise since ‘Scary Movie 2‘ in 2001. The reunion also fulfils a promise he made to their late father Howell, whose last wish was for his sons to work together again.
The backstory is not a pleasant one, with Wayans revealing how he believes him and his brothers were pushed out of their own franchise by Harvey and Bob Weinstein after the first two films — which grossed $278 million and $141 million respectively — became major hits. When the brothers asked for a raise for a third film, the Weinsteins allegedly countered with a lowball offer and then, without the Wayans‘ knowledge, moved forward with ‘Scary Movie 3‘ using their ideas.
“We got an announcement on New Year’s Eve that they were doing ‘Scary Movie 3‘,” Wayans told Variety. “The franchise was stripped from us. And we were just asking for our fair share.” He also alleged the Weinsteins failed to properly pay royalties from the first two films. “They absolutely did us wrong. Absolutely. We could’ve sued, and we probably would’ve won.”
He is not carrying bitterness into the reboot, at least publicly. “What they did is between them and God. I don’t applaud that type of behavior, but I can’t hold hate and hurt in my heart if I want to evolve,” he said.
When current Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman approached him about returning, his condition was straightforward: the brothers had to come with him. “I can’t do this without my brothers, so I got Shawn and Keenen on board. This is a return back to the franchise we all created, so forget all the bad years. This isn’t Scary Movie 6 — this is a reboot,” Marlon asserts.
