Following the massive Facebook outage which affected other apps including Whatsapp and Instagram, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has issued an apology and explanation
The outage, which affected Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, went on for hours and sparked a variety of theories on platforms such as Twitter, Reddit, and more.
In a statement which was released on Monday, Zuckerberg stated:
“Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger are coming back online now. Sorry for the disruption today—I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about.”
The entire situation occurred following a 60 minutes feature by whistleblower Frances Haugen, who claimed recent internal research from Facebook indicated that the company had contributed to the massive flow of misinformation online.
Zuckerberg’s net worth was reported to have plummeted by billions, following the events of early hours of Monday, with Facebook shares also suffering a fall.
According to Complex, a rep for the social media giant expressed their appreciation for users’ “patience” as operations were getting restored.
Adding that: “To everyone who was affected by the outages on our platforms today: we’re sorry. We know billions of people and businesses around the world depend on our products and services to stay connected. We appreciate your patience as we come back online.”
VP of engineering and infrastructure, Santosh Janardhan also provided the following explanation in a subsequent blog post:
“Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication. This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a halt.”
There is currently “no evidence” that user data was compromised during the outage, according to Janardhan.
