The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office chose not to seek the death sentence for Corey Walker at a hearing on Tuesday. Instead, Deputy District Attorney Hilary Williams is now pursuing the maximum punishment, which is life in prison without the possibility of parole, if found guilty.

Corey Walker, 19, is due back in court today to make a formal plea. Walker was charged with murder together with two minors and another adult, with the exceptional circumstance that the killing took place during the conduct of a robbery and a burglary, making him eligible for the death sentence.

According to the Daily Beast, Attorney George Gascon said in December that the death penalty is “never an appropriate resolution in any case.” The three minors accused of killing Jackson have been prosecuted in juvenile court.

The news comes a month after Walker’s parents requested a private meeting with the late rapper’s parents.
