Taking to Twitter yesterday (Sept. 9th), Laura Mvula slammed the organization when her third album ‘Pink Noise,’ which was one of 12 contenders for this year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize, wasn’t picked for the win during last nights event held at Hammersmith’s Eventim Apollo.
I get robbed. A lot

The £25,000 prize, however, went to newbie Arlo Parks whose debut album ‘Collapsed In Sunbeams,’ was picked for the win. Laura followed up with another tweet, asking the organization to “loose my number.”
Mercury Prize can lose my number

However, Laura’s sentiment’s wasn’t sitting well with some fans, as a user tweeted:
Be happy for Arlo smh.

She then replied saying:
You miss my point

Some hours later, the songbird shared another tweet, addressing critics who slammed her for not congratulating and celebrating the win of her fellow musician.
She tweeted:
I don’t expect to be understood by the British public. I knew I would be called names after sharing my pain a bit (was meant to be tongue n cheek)

However, it wasn’t all bad critics for Laura though, as fellow star Jo Whiley and comedian Alison Spittle applauded her for her contribution to the show and her music.
Your performance was stunning 💙
— Jo Whiley (@jowhiley) September 10, 2021
Alison also tweeted: “You’re brilliant your body of work is the prize. No one can claim that.”
Laura’s tweet about being “robbed” a lot is likely alluding to her first two albums ‘Sing To The Moon’ which was released in 2013 and ‘The Dreaming Room’ which was released in 2016, all of which were nominated for the Mercury Prize but lost to James Blake’s ‘Overgrown’ and Skepta’s ‘Konnichiwa’ respectively.
She did, however, take home an award last night in the form of the Popjustice Twenty Quid Music Prize.
What are your thoughts on Laura’s sentiments?
