Launched in partnership between the Official Charts Company and Everything R&B, the new weekly chart has been created specifically to recognise R&B music by British artists and provide a new benchmark for the records making an impact across the UK.
The Top 20 is compiled using UK sales and streaming data, with eligible tracks required to have been released within the previous 12 months. The chart spans the increasingly diverse sounds sitting within British R&B, from contemporary and alternative R&B to neo-soul, R&B-pop and soul-influenced rap.
The first chart also highlights the depth of the current scene, with Cleo Sol, Odeal, Jordan Adetunji, Ella Mai, Pip Millett, Olivia Dean, Nia Smith and Children of Zeus among the artists securing places in the inaugural Top 20.
Its arrival represents a significant milestone for a genre that has produced generations of influential British artists without previously having a dedicated official UK chart focused on its homegrown scene.
For kwn, the launch adds another piece of history: ‘Good Girl’ will forever hold the distinction of being the first song to top the Official R&B UK Chart.
