The rap duo Krept & Konan are recording England’s football anthem for the European Championships, which will provide the soundtrack to the upcoming summer season. The pair will follow in the footsteps of comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, who famously sung Three Lions with The Lightning Seeds in 1996.

However, we find ourselves in a different time to the classic , and Krept & Konan’s version of the soundtrack will sound nothing like Three Lions, with as the rappers plan to give it a more contemporary and urban twist. In the run-up to the final on July 11, BBC Three will broadcast a documentary about their journey to write the song, which will include interviews with football stars such as Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, West Ham’s Declan Rice, and Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings.

England manager Gareth Southgate will share music suggestions with the duo, to help them know what the soundtrack should comprise of. According to the show’s producers. Other singers, such as Aitch and London rapper and TV host Big Zuu, will be consulted by the pair.

BBC Three controller said: ‘This film explores the idea of cultural and national identity through music and sport – all of which is at the heart of what’s important to our audience.

‘Krept and Konan have been fundamental to the success of The Rap Game and we’re really excited for BBC Three viewers to get an exclusive preview into the making of the track as well as exclusive access to football talent at the top of their game.’

Executive producer and acme films creative director, Jaimie D’Cruz also added: ‘We’ve come a long way from the lad culture of ’96 and now live in a nation where our young ballers and rappers represent the very best of us: Krept and Konan are what national pride look like and sound like in 2021.’

Three Lions is currently the most well-known England football anthem, having reached number one when it was first unveiled in 1996.

This new version promises to continue to its iconic legacy and we can’t wait to hear it already.
