Kim Kardashian revealed this morning in a tweetstorm that her shapewear line, SKIMS, will design Team USA’s official undergarments, loungewear, and pajamas for the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

The beauty mogul went on to express how much the deal meant to her, which apparently dates back to when she was around 10 years old and hearing all about the Olympics from her stepdad.
She then explained how she came to admire and appreciate the dedication of the athletes, saying:
Ever since I was 10 years old, I’ve heard every single detail about the Olympics from my stepdad. As I would watch the athletes compete, I would grow to understand the dedication and honor being a part of the Olympics embodied. pic.twitter.com/JAyWhKP52B

The mother of four went on:
I traveled w my stepdad and family to all different cities for the Olympic trials, the Olympics and track meets of @Caitlyn_Jenner’s and at every stop I would buy an Olympic t-shirt as a souvenir. pic.twitter.com/N95515zTJa

She concluded by saying:
When I received the call inviting Skims to be a part of @TeamUSA 🇺🇸, every moment I’ve spent admiring the strength and energy of the Olympians from the sidelines came full circle. pic.twitter.com/ZTwvPaVBRr

Given the brand’s history of cultural appropriation, the idea that SKIMS will be attending the Tokyo Olympics is a bit ironic. As you may recall, Kardashian first dubbed the shapewear line “Kimono” in 2019, a moniker that drew widespread criticism, including a personal letter from Kyoto Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa, prompting Kim to alter the name.
Following the backlash, Kim explained in an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians her reason for altering the brand’s name, ultimately saying the personal letter from the mayor moved her to.
“He was very thoughtful and very kindly explaining to me the meaning of kimono and why that’s so important to their culture. Reading that letter, I felt an understanding. I definitely did not want to disrespect a culture.”

SKIMS is the newest brand to collaborate with Team USA, following Ralph Lauren and Levi’s. The capsule collection will be available for purchase on the brand’s website and will feature minimalist sports bras, leggings, and boxer briefs printed with Team USA and Olympic emblems.
