Katy Perry is facing backlash over her decision to collaborate with Dr. Luke on her latest single, “Woman’s World.”
The producer has been embroiled in controversy for years due to his legal battle with Kesha, who accused him of sexual assault and emotional abuse. Though the case was dismissed in 2016 and settled in 2023, many fans were disappointed with Perry’s choice to work with Dr. Luke, reigniting the debate surrounding his past.
Fans took to social media to express their frustration, accusing Perry of avoiding difficult questions regarding her collaboration. Some felt Katy failed to explain her decision to work with Dr. Luke once again, with one fan commenting, “Katy Perry totally dodged the question though,” MikeyTBH asserted. “Her answer didn’t explain why she chose to work with Dr. Luke again, she simply just said ‘yeah I am working with him again and many others’ lol..” The uproar has cast a shadow over the release of “Woman’s World,” a song that was meant to celebrate female empowerment.
In response, Perry defended her creative choices, explaining that the track was the result of a broad collaboration with multiple producers, and Dr. Luke was only one part of the process. She emphasized that the song was deeply personal, reflecting her own experiences and perspectives as a woman in the music industry. “When I speak about ‘Woman’s World,’ I speak about feeling so empowered now, as a mother, as a woman,” she said.
“… I created all of this with several different collaborators, people that I’ve collaborated with from the past, from Teenage Dream era. All of that.,” Perry remarked on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
Despite the controversy, the legal battle between Kesha and Dr. Luke has been officially settled, with both parties reaching an agreement earlier this year. Kesha has expressed a desire to move forward from the painful chapter.
