Jorja Smith returned in March with the melancholy new single “Addicted,” followed by another hit, “Gone,” and some gloomy graphics. With the latter track, she also hinted at the release of a new EP, Be Right Back, which has now arrived.
Smith clarified that the current effort was only a placeholder, implying that a bigger follow-up to 2018’s Lost & Found might be in the works, saying: “It’s called Be Right Back because it’s just something I want my fans to have right now. This isn’t an album and these songs wouldn’t have made it. If I needed to make these songs, then someone needs to hear them too.”
Included in the new EP are a number of surprise tracks such as “Buss Down” featuring Shaybo, and it reveals a more vulnerable side of the South London rapper. Smith’s vocals are as gentle and fragile as ever, though she’s still not afraid to let loose when the time comes. Some of the instrumentals have a grimier feel, especially on “Digging,” which contrasts the EP’s ambient string parts with a somewhat heavy bass guitar riff.
Per previous releases from Smith, fans can expect something mega when the South London femcee is ready with new material.
