Jhené Aiko has shut down speculation that lyrics from her new album Westside Whimsy are about former partner Big Sean allegedly cheating on her.
Following the release of her first album in six years, fans began dissecting some of Aiko’s more revealing lyrics, with one social media post suggesting a particular song referenced discovering that a partner had been unfaithful.
The lyrics sparked conversation online due to Aiko’s long-running relationship with Big Sean, with some listeners quickly connecting the song’s subject matter to the Detroit rapper.
However, Aiko stepped into the conversation herself to make it clear that the assumption was incorrect, responding from her verified social media account to deny that the lyrics were about Sean.
The singer did not reveal who or what inspired the track, leaving the meaning behind the song open beyond her clarification.
Aiko and Big Sean began dating on and off after years of collaborating musically and welcomed their son, Noah Hasani, in 2022. Their highly publicised relationship has frequently led fans to analyse both artists’ music for clues about their personal lives.
The speculation comes as Aiko begins a new musical chapter with Westside Whimsy, her fourth studio album and first full-length project since 2020’s Chilombo.
The 20-track record features Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Larry June and explores themes including heartbreak, healing and self-discovery.
While Westside Whimsy may find Aiko reflecting on relationships and the experiences of the past six years, she has made one thing clear: fans shouldn’t automatically assume every heartbreak lyric is about Big Sean.
