According to court records, Jamie Spears has agreed to step aside as conservator of his daughter Britney Spears’ estate “when the time is right,’ as documents reveal he’s ‘already been working’ on finding a new conservator.
The news comes almost two months after the singer came out in court, demanding an end to the contentious arrangement that has ruled her life for the past 13 years, giving her father and others power over her personal and professional life. A resignation from Jamie Spears’ would be a major step forward in her long battle to be free of her father’s influence.
Per court documents filed on Thursday, 12th Aug. Mr. Spears’ lawyer claimed that Jamie “does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests”, adding that, “Mr Spears intends to work with the court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator.” The documents also suggested that he’d “already been working on such a transition” with Britney’s former lawyer who resigned after the singer’s explosive testimony in June.
The filing that urged the judge to deny Britney’s petition to remove her dad as conservator continued:
“Mr Spears continues to serve dutifully, and he should not be suspended or removed, and certainly not based on false allegations. Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition needs to be orderly and include a resolution of matters pending before the court.”
In an email to the Guardian on Thursday, Britney Spears’ lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, said the filing was “a major victory for Britney Spears and another step toward justice,” while also encouraging Jamie to “step aside immediately.”
Adding: “We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr Spears’ sworn deposition in the near future.”
Britney recently accused her father of “conservatorship abuse,” during her lengthy address to the court via phone, where she claimed that the conservatorship compelled her to work against her wishes and restricted her personal health decisions, as well as her ability to marry or have another child for that matter.
Jamie Spears has been in control of the singer’s finances since stepping down as a personal conservator in 2019. In recent court documents, attorneys representing Jamie Spears and Jodi Montgomery, the licensed conservator who took over and oversees her medical care, have locked horns, blaming each other for the abuse the singer has alleged in recent testimonies.
According to court documents, judge Brenda Penny refused a plea to expedite a hearing on whether or not to remove Jamie Spears earlier this week. Hence, a final ruling has yet to be decided on the matter.
