HBO Max was rumored to have started work on an animated Game of Thrones spinoff earlier this year, and now there are reportedly more in the pipeline.

Two additional animated series are in development for HBO Max, according to The Hollywood Reporter, bringing the total number of potential animated shows to three. However, there is no confirmation of the shows making a debut as HBO has previously shelved shows even after shooting a pilot.

According to reports, one of the three animated projects in development will center on the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, an area that was only barely touched during George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ novels and was not completely explored in HBO’s original series. However, a character that sailed to the region is included in the forthcoming prequel series House of the Dragon, which began production early this year.

Details on the two other prospective animated Game of Thrones series are limited at the moment, but at least one of them is expected to contribute to HBO Max’s burgeoning adult animation lineup.

In April, HBO announced that House of the Dragon had begun filming, along with a snapshot of a cast table reading shared to Twitter. Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, and Fabien Frankel are among those slated to appear in the series.

The 10-episode series, executive produced by George R.R. Martin, will take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The narrative will follow Rhaenyra and Aegon II Targaryen as they vie for the Iron Throne’s heir.

The first season is scheduled to air in 2022.
