The estate of George Michael has chimed in on Lorde’s new song Solar Power being compared to the late singer’s classic Freedom ’90.

After a four-year hiatus, Lorde returned with ‘Solar Power,’ which is the first off her third album of the same name, seemingly having the best time of her life as she danced around on a beach in the visuals for the track.

On social media, many have pointed out what they believe are similarities, suggesting that Michael’s estate should be compensated in some way.

His estate issued a brief statement on his website, expressing their position on the matter which reads:

“We are aware that many people are making a connection between Freedom ’90 by George Michael and Solar Power by Lorde which George would have been flattered to hear, so on behalf of one great artist to a fellow artist, we wish her every success with the single.”

In a message to fans, Lorde explained the album’s meaning: “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors.”

Adding.: “In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”

As of writing, there is no official release date yet for Lorde’s forthcoming album but the New Zealand star stated that it would be out “very soon.” Stay tuned for more updates.
