Speaking to BBC, the Wonder Woman defended her stance to cast as Cleopatra, explaining the reasons why she is the perfect woman for the role as well as pointing out that Cleopatra was a Ptolemaic ruler, who descended from Macedonia and ruled over the region for hundreds of years.

Critics and fans alike are furious about the decision from the filmmakers not to cast an Arab or African woman to play the role of the Egyptian queen.

Explaining how the choice came about, she said: “First of all if you want to be true to the facts then Cleopatra was Macedonian. We were looking for a Macedonian actress that could fit Cleopatra. She wasn’t there, and I was very passionate about Cleopatra.”

Speaking to her admiration for the doomed queen and her ambition to play the role to the best of her ability, Gal said:

“I have friends from across the globe, whether they’re Muslims or Christian or Catholic or atheist or Buddhist, or Jewish of course…People are people, and with me I want to celebrate the legacy of Cleopatra and honor this amazing historic icon that I admire so much.”

Calling out the critics, Gadot said: “You know, anybody can make this movie, and anybody can go ahead and do it,” she said. “I’m very passionate that I’m going to do my own too.”
