Patoranking has tapped Ruger for his new single “Shake It,” a dancehall and Afrobeats combination that plays to both artists’ strengths. The offering welcomes the reggae-dancehall foundation Patoranking has built his career on — the same sound that ran through “Girlie O,” “My Woman My Everything,” and “Abule” — while Ruger, who broke through with “Bounce” and “Asiwaju,” adds a looser, more instinctive energy on top of it.
The pairing makes sense on paper and, by the sound of the track, in practice too. Patoranking has been one of the more consistent figures in Nigerian music for over a decade, moving between reggae, dancehall, and Afrobeats without losing his identity in any of them. Ruger is newer to it but has proven he can hold his own in a range of settings. Putting them together on something club-ready and built for summer is a fairly straightforward idea executed well.
“Shake It” is available above.
