Mannywellz returns with his new project Small Chops. The title borrows from a familiar Nigerian term for finger food, something light, easy, meant to be shared, which sets the mood before you have even pressed play. The project is being positioned as a summer release, and the Afro-fusion and soul blend Mannywellz works in suits that brief well.
But going by what he has said about the music, the lightness of the title is only part of the picture. On “How It Feels,” one of the project’s tracks, he explained his thinking plainly: “I make music not just to be heard, but to be felt. ‘How It Feels‘ is about the emotional risk that comes with loving someone fully — the beauty and the fear that exist at the same time.”
That tension, which is something warm and enjoyable on the surface, something more considered underneath, has run through his work for a while. Earlier projects including “Ouu Ahh,” “Mirage,” and the Mr Oúlala EP each leaned into narrative depth and textured production in a way that went beyond mood music.
