Guvna B has released This Bed I Made, an 11-track album accompanied by a short film of the same name, both out today, April 24th. The project deals with addiction, recovery, stigma, and what it actually takes to rebuild — not as abstract themes, but as lived experience rendered in conscious rap, jazz-inflected production, and a delivery that sits somewhere between bars and spoken word.
His choice of collaborators reflect how seriously he took the subject matter, with Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn appearing on “Stickers On The Wall,” Bawo on “Nearly,” Claudia Isaki on “Kintsugi,” and Samm Henshaw and the Melodies from Heaven Choir also feature. Trauma expert Dr. Gabor Maté contributes clinical perspective, which is an unusual addition to an album and works better than it probably sounds on paper.
Production comes from Benjiflow, TSB, Joel Baker, Maths Time Joy, Quinn Oulton, SAMPAH, Zento, and Jacob Riddall, a varied enough roster to keep eleven tracks from blurring together.
The short film, directed by Christoph Davis and written by and starring Guvna B himself, is backed by The Forward Trust and Samaritans. It screened at Curzon Cinema with a Q&A featuring Jordan Stephens, representatives from both organisations, Tony Adams MBE, Samm Henshaw, Kwaku Asante, Jay Prince, and others.
The conversation around the film feels as intentional as the film itself, with Guvna appearing on BBC Radio 1 to discuss men’s mental health alongside Prince William and Professor Green, giving a clear indication of his goals for the project. He is also gearing up for live shows which includes two sets at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and an appearance at Love Supreme Festival.
Guvna B is a triple MOBO Award winner whose previous album The Village Is On Fire debuted at number one on the Official Hip-Hop and R&B Chart. He has worked with Michaela Coel, Ezra Collective, Wretch 32, and D Double E, and published a book on toxic masculinity called ‘Unspoken‘. This Bed I Made is his most open work yet, and given his track record of not flinching from difficult material, that is saying something.
