With “Sumotherhood,” Adam Deacon, renowned director of the British hit dramas “Kidulthood” and “Adulthood,” will direct his next film following a long hiatus.
The film which is billed as an urban action comedy, will reunite Deacon with Michael Vu, with whom he previously worked on his directorial debut film “Anuvahood,” in 2011. Jazzie Zonzolo, who is a comedy performer will also serve as co-writer on the film. “Sumotherhood” is produced by Finn Bruce of Belstone Pictures, Deacon’s Deaconstructed company, and Piece of Pie Productions with Kevin Bishop, Robert Williams, and Barry McNicholl of Piece of Pie Productions, serving as executive producers.
In 2006, Deacon made his breakthrough with the drama “Kidulthood,” which led him to win BAFTA’s prestigious Rising Star award, knocking out Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston in 2012.
Deacon then proceeded to work on many films with actor-director Noel Clarke early in his career (who currently faces several accusations of bullying and sexual misconduct) but later accused Clarke of bullying and ruining his career in 2011.
Deacon, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has struggled with mental illness after his arrest which was fueled by accusations of harassing Clarke.
However, with the recent reports of sexual misconduct and bullying levied against Noel Clarke, the industry is most certainly taking Deacon’s earlier accusations of bullying by Clarke into account.
Deacon said of his latest appointment: “The last few years have been a turbulent time for me and it’s been tough to get my life back on track,” said Deacon.
“After previously having a hit movie I thought it would be a lot easier to get my follow-up film made. Many false starts later we finally have a great team behind us and I am ready to create something new and fresh that hasn’t been seen before. My vision as a director has grown and matured over the past ten years and ‘Sumotherhood’ pushes the boundaries of what can be done.
“This will be the first British urban action comedy and we think it will be the perfect movie to get people back into cinemas and put a smile on their faces.”
Producer Finn Bruce also said of Deacon’s involvement: “I have followed Adam’s career for some time now, and am a big fan of his talent and creative vision. It’s an honor to produce his next film and we look forward to bringing this hilarious and action packed script to life with a plethora of established and new talent in front of and behind the camera.”
Casting for the project is now underway, with Dan Hubbard (“Captain Phillips”) engaged as casting director. Some of the same actors that starred in Deacon’s “Anuvahood” will return, including fellow writer Zonzolo, Richie Campbell (“Top Boy”), and comic Eddie Kadi.
Piece of Pie Productions also finances the film. Principal filming will begin in London and Los Angeles this October, with a worldwide release scheduled for 2022.
