The COVID vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech is anticipated to gain complete regulatory approval as soon as next week.
According to the New York Times, the US Food and Drug Administration hoped to finish the approval procedure by the end of the week. However, sources close to the agency claimed that as at Friday, authorities were still working on documentation and agreements with the company. The FDA is reportedly aiming to complete the vaccine approval process as soon as Monday.
The Pfizer vaccine would become the first to be completely licensed by the federal government when approval is official. The FDA granted emergency use authorization to the two-dose injection first, followed by the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccinations. It is accessible for people aged 12 and above and is being delivered across the United States. Currently, in the U.S., more than 200 million doses of the vaccine have been administered.
The announcement of the “imminent” authorization comes as the country sees an increase in Delta variant cases. According to the New York Times, a complete approval may result in more vaccination requirements at work, as well as an increase in vaccinations among vaccine-hesitant individuals.
