F9: The Last Saga, which just had the greatest opening weekend at the box office since the pandemic began, is on track to surpass the $500 million threshold worldwide on Monday, becoming the first Hollywood film to achieve the feat since 2019.

According to Deadline, the Justin Lin-directed film is anticipated to earn another $32.9 million during the Fourth of July weekend, bringing its domestic total to a healthy $126 million. In addition, the movie has grossed $374 million in 50 countries overseas.

The revelation comes only a week after F9 earned an estimated $70 million in its North American premiere, making it the biggest opening weekend for a Universal film since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

Universal’s decision to delay the film, which was initially set for a May 2020 release, appeared controversial at the time but with these impressive figures being recorded at the box office, it’s hard to argue their move.

Speaking to CNN in December, Donna Langley, chairwoman of Universal’s filmed entertainment group said: “[Theaters] were quite upset with us because they thought that we were overreacting. Even people inside the company thought that we were a little crazy for doing it. But we just felt that it was better to sort of plan for the worst and hope for the best.”

‘Fast 9’ remains as one of the most star-studded cast in the industry with actors such as Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, John Cena, Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Jordana Brewster, Helen Mirren, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, and Michael Rooker all making the cut.
