Maisie Peters, Ed Sheeran’s new protégé, has expressed her gratitude for the singer’s decision to mentor her, admitting that being connected with him has undoubtedly created opportunities.
Last month, it was revealed that the ‘Happier’ singer had signed Maisie to his Gingerbread Man Records label, which was established in 2015, becoming one of the first to make the cut.
The pair have seemingly developed a strong working relationship, with the ‘Perfect’ singer co-writing her new track Psycho.
According to Maisie, who spoke to Metro.co.uk, they: “Wrote it as the last song for the album, Steve Mac got on it and it was danceable and super fun. It was super quick,” adding “we wrote it in half an hour.”
As many with such an opportunity would, Maisie claims to be unfazed by the pressure of Ed’s stardom, as she takes it in stride.
Maisie explained: “I don’t [feel pressure] because I think I put myself under a lot of pressure anyway.”
“Working with Ed has been amazing and the whole team has been amazing and I feel the same amount of pressure that I always have. I work really hard and would love to see the work that I love do really well but also I’m aware that it’s all about the journey.”
Adding: “It’s been amazing to work with him and become friends with him. We’ve been in the same circles for a while as he’s signed to Atlantic, we’ve always been around each other.”
Last year, Maisie, 21, paid a visit to Ed’s Suffolk home, where “they got to know each other” and formed a “really natural and easy” connection.
“I’m definitely flattered and it’s amazing that he does believe in me so much,” she said.
Maisie went on to elaborate, saying: “Yeah definitely. I feel it’s really invaluable that someone like that is so respected and so liked and appreciated by people and when they only have good things to say about you that can only mean a good thing.
“It’s very educational working with Ed, he’s such a powerhouse artist and he’s so talented. He really does work so quickly and you have to run to keep up but luckily I work so quickly too so I was able to stay afloat.
“He’s really good at listening to you and working out what would make sense for you. It’s been amazing and I’ve definitely learnt a lot.”
‘You Signed Up For This,’ which will serve as Maisie’s debut album, will be released on August 27. It is billed as a coming-of-age narrative and a love letter to girlhood, written with humor, charm, and calm confidence.
She said of the album: “The title is from a lyric in the first song we wrote for the album opener. When I wrote it, the title was about the listener coming on the musical journey with me and suggesting that it’s very much what you signed up for.
“It’s like a tongue-in-cheek statement of being well, for good or for bad, you just signed up for this.”
