Speaking with SiriusXM, the multi-Grammy Award-winner shared about a period in time when he considered retiring from music to focus on being a father to his newborn at the time.

Ed and his wife Cherry welcomed their first daughter Lyra Antarctica in August, announcing the birth just days after rumors of Cherry’s pregnancy surfaced.

With his single Bad Habits, the singer-songwriter has returned to the top of the charts, which would have been a shame if the hitmaker had indeed retired.

Speaking on SiriusXM, the star said: “In my year off, I was kind of searching for who I was because I stopped playing music for a bit. And music is entirely me as a person.

“And then I had my daughter — well, my wife had our daughter, but I’m a parent. And then I was like, “That’s it, this is me, I’m just going to be a dad, I’m not going to play music anymore”.”

Ed, on the other hand, thought that it was “more important” for Lyra to know that her parents “love working hard” after taking a break to spend time with her.

The ‘Perfect’ singer said: “I think it’s more important for my daughter to grow up knowing that her parents have the work ethic… and love creating and enjoy their jobs and seeing that rather than like looking at your dad as technically unemployed.”

As of now, Cherry has reportedly taken an “unlimited sabbatical” at Deloitte in London, where she works as a technology and digital risk manager, in order to start a family with Ed.

Per reports, the 11-month-old appears to have an interest in music, as she’s already been in the studio with her father.

Ed told KISS Breakfast: “She’s been in the recording booth with me, asleep on my shoulder and stuff like that. It depends – she is now of an age where she is just out and about and awake but in the first two months they sleep like 21 hours a day.”

Although Ed did not abandon music, he admitted to SiriusXM that getting back into his elements after his hiatus was difficult, stating, “There was a long period of time where I just didn’t really know. Everything was directionless.”

Ed’s first solo single in two years, Bad Habits, went to number one in the UK and number five in the US, which is a relief to his fans, giving them an assurance that the hitmaker is here to stay.
