The venue, which is expected to open later this year, will seat 2,500 people and is billed as “versatile and intimate,” with ambitions to stage 200 concerts and events a year.
Speaking in a statement, the OVO rapper said: “Some of my most memorable shows were playing smaller rooms like History. I wanted to take those memories and what I learned to create an incredible experience for both the artists and the fans.”
Riley O’Connor, chairman of Live Nation Canada explained: “History will offer guests up-close experiences with their favourite artists that are unrivalled in Toronto. We take pride in and expect History to become an important part of the community.”
Michael Rapino, President and CEO, Live Nation Entertainment, also added: “We saw an opportunity to bring Toronto a great new venue, and we have so much gratitude and respect for Drake teaming up with us to bring it to life in the best way possible.”
The facility will be “an anchor of the community, delivering music and culture while also driving economic activity and creating numerous employment opportunities” in the city, according to Live Nation.
History is said to have been in the works for more than three years, with completion expected this summer. At 1663 Queen Street East, the previous home of off-track betting establishment Champions Greenwood, the facility is located in Toronto’s east end, smack in the center of the Beaches district.
In May 2016, Live Nation submitted a development proposal to renovate the venue. The promoter’s proposal includes a mezzanine on the second level and stated that the location is appropriate for a venue since it is in a mixed-use neighborhood, on a main road, easily accessible by public transportation, and isolated from residential areas.
